Chinese shares closed lower Monday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 7.28 points, or 0.24 percent, to 3,022.75.

The Shenzhen Component Index fell 111.19 points, or 0.85 percent, to 12,925.05.

Hong Kong stocks lost 93 points, or 0.38 percent, to close at 24,303.07 on Monday.


Japan

Japanese stocks fell Monday on profit-taking after a sharp rise on Friday.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index lost 48.38 points, or 0.50 percent, to 9,719.70.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 0.79 point, or 0.09 percent, to 852. 34.

Australia

The Australian sharemarket brushed off bad global news to end higher, boosted by a jump in BHP Billiton shares after it quashed speculation of a tilt at Woodside Petroleum.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index closed up 30.6 points at 4971.2.

The broader All Ordinaries index was 28.4 points higher at 5064.9.
